This year, alongside our annual Forum, we have introduced a new initiative called the Guest Speaker Series, in which we aim to invite a number of individual Guest Speakers throughout the academic year to deliver keynote speeches. Our primary aim is to invite influential individuals to share their personal experiences or insights such that they may give both an inspiring talk to those attending the event, as well as an appreciation of Korea.
Based in Seoul, Sokeel Park oversees LiNK’s programs with North Korean refugees and works with North Korean and non-North Korean experts to develop analysis and strategies to accelerate change and opening in North Korea. Park regularly briefs policymakers and the South Korean and international media on North Korean issues, and co-directed The Jangmadang Generation, a documentary highlighting social change in North Korea. In 2019, Park received an MBE for services to UK-Korea relations from Queen Elizabeth II.
Our First Guest Speaker Series will be featuring Sokeel Park: South Korea Country Director for Liberty in North Korea. Liberty in North Korea is the largest NGO that aims to rescue North Korean refugees, empower North Koreans in their new lives and raise awareness on North Korean human rights.
The event is titled Not Just Nukes: Insights from a decade working with North Korean defectors. Starting with an introduction into the organisation ‘Liberty in North Korea’ and his personal experience in working with an NGO, the event will end with an informal Q&A session to provide the audience with an opportunity to gain personal insight.
